Industry Analysis

 

PESTEL Analysis

• Help to identify factors in the Macroeconomic environment that have the potential to impact the performance of an industry and the ability of an organization to achieve its objectives
• Political forces - 국가/주별로 누가 정권을 잡느냐, 국제 정치, 등등  - 정부차원의 정책 및 결정은 관할구역에 있는 기업에 큰 영향을 주므로 면밀히 모니터링해야함.
• Economic forces  - 환율, 금리, 원자재 가격, 고용/실업률, GDP 및 경제성장률 - Globalization에 따라 지역별로 서로 다른 전략을 취해야함.
• Sociocultural forces

#9 Genomics & Synthetic biology --> helps to understand the biology and cause of cancer better so that the company can develop the targeted drug with less side effects

• Environmental forces ---> This aspects highlight the importance of ethical, socially appropriate and sustainable management
• Legal & Regulatory forces -- 법조항들이나 규제가 비지니스에 미치는 영향뿐 아니라, 법을 집행하는게 얼마나 일관될지, reliable할지, 법체계에 대응하는데 시간 및 비용이 얼마나 들지, 법 집행하는 사람이 얼마나 예측가능한지, 편견은 없는지, 라이센스, 규제, 사업태도에 어떤 영향이 있을지에 대한 전반적인 이해가 필요함.

SWOT Analysis

특정 산업 내에서의 기회나 위협을 식별하는데 유용함. BUT 분석을 지원하는 프레임워크의 기본이 되는 경제적 원칙이 없음. 

 

 

 

Five Forces Framework  -

-> 외부 요인이 회사의 전략적 기회를 제한하거나 생성하는 방법을 강조하는 방식으로 경쟁의 경제적 기본을 다룸.

 

 

Industry value chain (supplier - Rival - Buyers): 원자재에서 고객에게 전달되는 최종 상품/서비스가 되는 동안 가치를 더하는 모든 활동.

 

Activity 2.3

Supplier? Unsure. Raw material suppliers for drug??

Rivalry? high by competitors (new drug, new mode of action or better drug or cheaper drug)

Buyers? Patient gets smarter, information is more accessible. This is good & bad. Doctors has more power. Also government plays a role, and has strong power on price to reimburse.

Threat of entry --> Always possible with new biotech, and AI/MI

Substitutes?  --> Earlier detection or prevention of cancer, Removal of cancer via surgery, people die with other than cancer? (viral infection or war?)

• The real point of competition is not to beat your rivals. It’s to earn profits.
• The five forces framework explains the industry’s average prices and costs, and therefore the average industry profitability you are trying to beat.
• Powerful buyers will force prices down or demand more value in the product, thus capturing more of the value for themselves.
• Powerful suppliers will charge higher prices or insist on more favorable terms, lowering industry profitability. 
• Substitutes—products or services that meet the same basic need as the industry’s product in a different way—put a cap on industry profitability

 

 

1. 산업군이 다르더라도 5가지 힘에 의해 수익성이 좌우됨.
2. 산업구조 (즉 5가지 힘 - 기존 경쟁사, 새로운 경쟁자 진입, 대체제, 공급자, 소비자) 가 수익성을 결정함. 

1. Industry structure is sticky / 일단 산업이 성장기를 지나면, 특정 산업의 평균 수익성은 잘 바뀌지 않음.

 

 

Competitor Analysis

마켓 리더 (경쟁우위업체)라면 찰출될 가치 (즉 수익)을 창출할 가능성이 높음.

 

Strategic Group Maps

산업안에서 유사한 전략을 가진 회사들을 2개의 strategic dimension으로 나열해봄으로써 그룹핑 하는 것. 이때 주의할 점은, 2개의 strategic dimension이 상관관계가 약하거나 없는 것을 선택할 것.

strategic dimensions can be

• Cost structure
• Range of product/service
• Level of R&D, the extent of innovation
• Product differentiation
• Level of focus on market segments
• Level of customer service
• Types of distribution
