대만에서 온 선물 + 칭찬하기

​년 초에 홍콩에서 부서 미팅이 있었다. 아시아 각국에서 워낙에 많은 사람들이 왔고, 그 사이 조직이 기하급수적으로 커진 탓도 있어서 아는 사람보다 모르는 사람들이 더 많은 그런 미팅이었다. 세션이 진행되다 잠깐 휴식시간이 주어졌는데 - 누군가 내게 와서는 너가 J 냐고 묻는다. 응?? 누구지??  자기는 대만에서 온 Teresa 인데 Pam 을아느냐고 묻는다. 대만의 Pam?? 대만에 Joyce 도 있고, Joy, Angelina, Abby, Julia도 알지만 Pam은 모르겠는데,,,  내가 벙뜬 표정을 지으니 날더러 줄게 있다며 다음 휴식 시간에 가져와서 주겠다고 하고는 총총이 사라졌다. 

그 다음 브레이크에 나타난 그녀가 내게 건네준 것은 이렇게 낱개 포장된 파인애플 케익이 절체통에 한가들 들어있는 쇼핑백이었다. Pam 이 내게 전해주라고 보낸 것이라며 말이다. 

여담이지만 - 대만산 파인애플 케익은 진짜 맛있다. 대만은 디저트의 왕국!! 그리고 대만산 녹차, 특히 동딩 우롱차도 진짜로 맛있다. 오죽하면 대만에서 호주로 출장오는 사람이 있으면 타이페이 공항 면세점에서 사다다라고 내가 부탁을... 벌써 몇 사람한테 해서 공수해다 마셨는지 모르겠다. 

아무튼 이렇게 파인애플 케익 선물을 받았는데 갑자기 우쭐해 지는 기분이 들면서 동시에 챙피하다. 누군가는 나에게 고맙다며 이런 선물까지 따로 챙겨보내 주었던만 나는 정작 Pam 이 누구지? 이러고 있으니 말이다. Teresa가 겸연쩍었는지 Pam이 따로 나한테 이메일을 보낸다고 했다며 알려주고는 사라진다. 그 날 일정을 끝내고 방으로 올라가서 이메일을 확인하니 아니나 다를까 Pam 한테 이메일이 와 있다.

Pam이 누군가 했는데, 최근에 unblinding 이슈 (눈가림 해제)가 있어서 헤매고 있을때 걱정하지 말라며 차근차근 다음 단계를 알려주고, 이러이러하니 니 잘못은 전혀 없다 -- Pam, 걱정 마라 -- 하면서 본사랑 연락해서 이슈를 해결해 준적이 있었는데, 그게 고맙다고 이렇게 선물까지 보낸 것이었다. 그녀의 영어는 서툴렀지만 고마워 한다는 마음이 전해져 와서 나를 뿌듯하게 했다. 일하면서 - 사소하지만 시간이 많이 소요되는 성가신 일을 할 때는 - 특히 내가 해야할 일이 아닐때는 - 내가 이렇게까지 해야하나 싶기도 하지만 이렇게 고맙다는 인사를 받게 되면 다음에도 동기 부여가 되고, 이런 사람은 더 도와주고 싶은 마음이 든다.

아 ---- 나도 그녀에게 이런 작은 surprise 를 주어서 고맙다고 답방 선물을 보내야하는데... 다음 번에 대만에서 오는 사람과 미팅에서 만나게 되면 꼬옥!! Pam 선물을 챙겨 보내야겠다.

최근 몇 년 간은 한국 사람들, 대만, 호주 사람들이랑 함께 일할 기회가 많았는데 - 대만 사람들은 고맙다는 표현을 할때 말에서 그치지 않고 작은 선물을 하는 것을 자주 본다. 그리고 고맙다는 표현은 꼭 한다. 호주 사람들은 말로 고맙다는 말을 하는데, 듣는 사람이 기분 좋게, 그리고 칭찬하는 자신도 돋보이게 고맙다는 말을 잘 한다. 한국 사람들은 - 사실 고맙다는 말은 거의 안한다. 고맙다는 말은 아무리 많이 해도 손해볼게 없는데 말이다. 그리하여... 혹시라도 능동적으로 감사인사를 보내는데 도움이 될까 하여 내가 받거나 보낸 "Thank You" 노트 예시들을 조금 올려본다. 고맙다는 인사를 적절한 때 날려주는 것은 사회생활의 비법이니 기회가 될 때마다 많이 날리시길 바란다. 땡큐 라고 하는건 아부가 아니라 예의다.

예시 1 - 현명한 K 는 원래 회사 내부의 칭찬하기 시스템으로 나를 칭찬함으로써 보너스를 받게(?) 해주려고 노력하는 기염을 토했었다. 그리고 이렇게 별도로 이메일을 보내고, 내가 하는 프리젠테이션을 못본 내 보스를 cc에 넣어서 이런 센스 있는 메세지를 보내주었다.

It was a very valuable overview of how our company supports clinical research including in ABC cancer, to add to the body of evidence and ultimately help find a cure for ABC cancer.  I especially liked the patient story at the end which bought in the emotive element and what clinical research can mean for patients.

예시 2 - 현명한 C는 나를 칭찬하는 이메일을 내 보스 R에게 보내면서 나를 CC에 넣었다. 이런게 바로- 최고의 칭찬 방법 - 나의 상사에게 나를 칭찬하기 - 왜냐고? 회사생활 할때는 좋건 싫건 상사한테 잘보여야 하기때문에. 내 입으로 내가 칭찬받았다고 하기는 조금 거시기 하니까 말이다.

Because K wrote a nice email about Z, I am also feeling very appreciative and would like to also express my gratitude and tell you the glaringly obvious fact - J is amazing!

J has been helping me a ton for the past month, answering emails at all hours and being really welcoming even after I’ve asked a million questions! From training to recruitment meeting to CTMS to everything really, I don’t know what to do without her! She has been a very great mentor and I just wanted to thank you for giving me the opportunity to work and learn from J.

예시 3 - 복잡한 일을 잘 해왔으나 스포트라이트를 받을 일이 드문 나의 팀원 L을 위해 그녀에게 직접 땡큐 메세지를 보내는 대신, 매달 진행하는 미팅에서 이 장문의 글을, 부서장님이 모두 앞에서 낭독하도록 하였다... 

It’s sad for me to hear the news that L is handing over Project A, although this is of course unavoidable as she has moved country, leaving us for NZ. I would like to use this time to acknowledge the valuable role L has played on Project A.

As we all know, Project A is the first abc drug trial in both Australia and globally. It started in 2010 in America and then came to Australia in 2012. Because the project has been running for quite a long time, there has been no spotlight on, or particular glamour, for the responsible CRA. However, as you probably know, this is a very complex trial, and it deserves some credit. It started as a phase 1, initial target was to have 10 patients, but it ended up having...... In this trial, Australia has contributed 00 patients, just under 7% of the global overall enrolment. 

L joined this trial in Feb 2016. She quickly mastered this protocol, all study related procedures, and established a good relationship with all of her sites. Since then, there have been several DBLs and she always ensured that Australia rocked against all other countries and regions involved.  Thanks to L, I did not personally have to worry about the status of Project A at all. For example ...... Can you imagine how difficult it was to manage those....? L simultaneously escalated this to me whilst managing the PIs and the site beautifully, and eventually we solved all these problems and achieved DBL.

It has been a great pleasure working with L and I will miss her very much. I would like to wish her continuing success in NZ!

예시 4 - 내 팀원을 칭찬하기 위해 한국의 부서장님에게 보내고 팀원들은 모두 cc로 넣었다. 칭찬을 받는 사람도, 칭찬받는 사람들을 두고 계신 부서장님도 고맙다고 답이 왔다. 효과 200점!

Thank you for your attention to detail by our trusted CRA E, ...... Project B trial team considers Korea and APAC region very highly. As you may recall, APAC was the only region, asked to review the draft protocol amendment, which involves addition of a completely new cohort, with new indication and assessment method. 

I am proud of each and every one of you and appreciate all your fabulous work in 2016.
