Both Sides Now by Joni Mitchell

오늘은 조금 울쩍한 저녁. 조니 미첼의 히트곡 중 하나인 both sides now 란 곡이 듣고 싶은 그런 기분의 저녁이다. 

이 곡은 조니가 1967년 3월에 Saul Bellow의 소석책 Henderson the Rain King을 읽다가 영감을 받아서 쓴 곡이다. 1968년에 July Collins가 먼저 불렀고, 그 다음 해 조니의 앨범 Clouds 에 수록되었다. 그 후 프랑크 시나트라 (Frank Sinatra)를 비롯한 수 많은 가수들이 불렀고, 조니 자신도 2000년에 오케스트라와 함께 재녹음을 했을 정도로 유명한 곳이다. 롤링 스톤 잡지에 따르면 최고의 히트곡 500선 (The 500 Greatest Songs of All Time) 에서 171번에 랭크되어있다고 하니 그 대단함(?)을 느끼실 수 있으련가? 

내가 이 곡에 익숙해 진것은 그녀의 수 많은 곡들을 들어보다 보니 그녀의 목소리에 반해서 일수도 있겠지만 아마 처음은 영화 러브 액츄얼리 (Love Actually)에서 배경에 흐르는 음악으로 들은 것이 처음 이었을 것이다. 2000년에 그녀가 다시 부른 이 곡은 그만큼 흡입력이 있고, 사람의 마음을 파고 드는 데가 있었다. 그녀는 어떻게 이십대 초반의 젊은 나이에 이런 곡을 쓸 수 있었을까...
