The sound of silence

어제 새해 결심 후 가장 먼저 찾아보고 따라불러보는 노래는 사이먼 앤 가펑클의 The sound of silence다. 한국 사람이고 아니고를 떠나 세계 곳곳에 사는 많은 사람들이 한번 이상 들어봤음직한, 리듬을 들으면 알만한 곡이다. 음악의 젬병인 나도 리듬을 흥얼거릴 수 있으니 말이다.

이 곡은 찾아보니 Simon과 Garfunkel이 처음 듀오를 결정하고 처음 녹음한 곡중에 하나란다. 작사는 노래 가사 적는데는 천재성을 가졌다는 Paul Simon이 21살때  1963년과 1964년에 거쳐 욕실에서 끄적여 (?) 썼다고 하고, 노래는 같이 불렀다. 혹자들은 가펑클이 노래는 더 잘 한다고 말하곤 한다. 1964년에 음반을 발매했는데, 별 반응이 없어서 둘은 듀오를 해체하고 사이먼은 영국으로, 가펑클은 학업으로 다시 돌아갔다고 한다. 그런데 그 다음 해인 1965년에 이 곡이 보스턴과 플로리다 일대의 라디오를 타면서 사람들의 관심을 받게 되고, 급기야 remix를 통해 1965년에 싱글 앨범으로 재 발표되기에 이른다. 이를 계기로 사이먼과 가펑클은 재결합해서 1966년에 두번째 앨범을 내게 되었다는...

결과적으로 이 곡은 1999년 BMI가 발표한 20세기에 가장 많이 연주된 (틀어진이라고 해야하나?) 노래 18위에 올랐다고 한다. 

많은 사람들은 1963년 11월 22일에 있었던 케네디 대통령 저격사건에 대한 것이라고 믿는다고 하는데, 이건 믿거나 말거나란다. 작사를 한 가펑클은 이 곡의 의미를 ""the inability of people to communicate with each other, not particularly internationally but especially emotionally, so what you see around you are people unable to love each other." 즉, 국제적으로 특히나 감정적으로 사람들의 서로 소통하지 못하는 것에 대한 것, 그래서 서로 사랑하지 못하는 사람들에 대한 것이란다.
